There's nothing quite like receiving a gorgeous bouquet of roses. But the real magic is making them last. At Shop Flowers Today, we've been arranging roses for over 30 years, and we've picked up a few tricks along the way. Here are our top tips to keep your roses looking fresh for up to two weeks.
1. Trim the Stems at an Angle
As soon as you receive your roses, trim about an inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption. Use sharp scissors or garden shears — dull blades can crush the stems and block water flow. Re-trim every 2-3 days for best results.
2. Use Lukewarm Water
Many people use cold water, but lukewarm water (around room temperature) is actually better for roses. It moves up the stem more easily and helps the roses hydrate faster. Fill your vase about two-thirds full and change the water every two days.
3. Remove Leaves Below the Waterline
Any leaves sitting in the water will rot and create bacteria, which shortens the life of your roses. Strip off all leaves that would be submerged. This one simple step can add days to your bouquet's life.
4. Use the Flower Food Packet
That little packet that comes with your flowers? It's a game-changer. It contains sugar (food for the flowers), citric acid (to lower the water pH), and bleach (to kill bacteria). If you don't have one, you can make your own: mix 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of white vinegar, and a few drops of bleach per quart of water.
5. Keep Them Cool
Roses last longest in cool environments. Keep them away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and fruit bowls (fruit releases ethylene gas, which speeds up wilting). A cool spot in your home is ideal — some people even put their roses in the fridge overnight!
6. Mist the Petals
A light mist of water on the petals once a day can help keep them hydrated and looking fresh. Use a spray bottle and give them a gentle spritz — don't soak them, just a light mist.
